The Ruby Hill region and surrounding Livermore Valley is an ancient river bed, consisting of a thin layer of fertile top soil, with very stony soil underneath. This allows for excellent water drainage, which is optimal for grapevines. The Livermore Valley has an East-West orientation, which allows for the cool coastal Pacific breezes to both cool, and moderate the climate. This allows for warm California days, and cool nights. Compared to Napa, the Livermore Valley receives less rainfall, which allows for more control with irrigation. This gives vintners the opportunity to hold back water when the time is right which results in wine grapes with more concentration and flavor.

Our philosophy here at the new Ruby Hill Winery is to produce world-class wines of the highest caliber from the beautiful Livermore Valley and surrounding central coast regions. Our wines are typically designed to be rich, yet approachable, with good balance between fruit, oak, acidity and tannins. Zinfandel and Petite Sirah are our specialties, but we are also very passionate about Italian varietals such as Sangiovese and Barbera. In general, we work with typical French, Italian and Spanish varietals.

All wines are hand crafted in small lots with the utmost attention to detail. “Each wine, even fruit from the same vineyard but a different vintage, has its own personality. One needs to understand this personality and embrace it. The wine must be nurtured and cared for to optimize its potential” quotes Chris Graves, Winemaker for Ruby Hill Winery. “Although I may try to maintain a particular style from vintage to vintage, I treat every wine differently with respect to its own personality, and treat it with tender loving care.”
